The Secret to Success: Consistency

If you always do what you always did, you’ll always get what you always got. It’s a hard and uncomfortable truth, one that many of us struggle to accept. I’m guilty of it too. I want my life to change, yet there are times when I resist change or don’t even know where to begin. It’s frustrating, knowing that my circumstances can only truly change if I change.

Maybe this feels familiar to you. You desire something better but cling to the safety of where you are. The discomfort of change looms large, even when you know the life you want is on the other side. Life demands a price for growth, and that price is discomfort.

Discomfort: The Price of Growth

Every goal you pursue has a cost, and it’s often the opposite of what you’re trying to achieve. Saving money makes you feel broke, even as it builds your wealth. Going to the gym makes you feel weak, even as it strengthens you. Studying makes you feel inadequate, even as it sharpens your mind.

The willingness to sit with discomfort determines your success. Science supports this. A key brain region, the Anterior Cingulate Cortex (ACC), plays a significant role in willpower, emotional regulation, and persistence. Studies show that engaging in challenging tasks strengthens the ACC, making you better equipped to handle discomfort and push through difficulties. Conversely, avoiding challenges weakens this area, making it harder to cope in the future.

Think about times when you dreaded a task but felt incredible relief and pride afterward. That sense of accomplishment? That’s your ACC at work. Like muscles at the gym, the ACC needs consistent training to grow stronger.

The Power of Consistency

Consistency is the secret weapon of success. When you show up, day after day, even when it’s hard, you create momentum. Opportunities arise, obstacles shrink, and doors open. The world starts to bend to your will, not because life gets easier, but because you become sharper, more capable, and more resilient.

Life, as they say, is a grind. Some people face far tougher battles than others, but no one gets a free pass. The key isn’t in waiting for life to be kind, it’s in showing up for yourself, consistently.

Consistency doesn’t just help you achieve goals; it transforms your identity. Instead of just running a marathon, you become a runner. Instead of merely starting a business, you become a creator and provider. It’s about being rather than just achieving.

Consistency and Mental Health

The benefits of consistency extend beyond external success. Research highlights that consistent habits, particularly those involving physical activity, mindfulness, or goal-setting, significantly improve mental health. For example, a study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology found that individuals who practiced consistent daily routines experienced lower levels of stress and higher overall well-being.

Physical exercise, even moderate, has been shown to boost mood by releasing endorphins and reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression. Journaling, meditation, or even setting small, achievable goals consistently helps rewire the brain for positivity and resilience.

If you haven’t heard of David Goggins, look him up. He’s a living example of what relentless consistency looks like. Known for his extreme physical feats and unbreakable mindset, Goggins embodies the principle of showing up and doing the work, no matter how uncomfortable. While his routine may be extreme, his core message is universal: push through discomfort, and you’ll discover strength you didn’t know you had.

You don’t have to go to Goggins’ level, but his story reminds us that consistency builds not just results, but character.

Prove It to Yourself

One of the toughest parts of change is that sometimes, no one claps for you. Progress can feel lonely, especially when it’s slow or invisible. But the applause that matters most is your own. You’re the one person you’ll spend your entire life with, so why not prove to yourself what you’re capable of?

Ask yourself this: is the pain of discomfort greater than the pain of staying the same? Only you can answer that. Life will never hand you perfect conditions for change, but it will reward those who show up, consistently and courageously.

Nothing changes if nothing changes.
